We strongly recommend lightly lubricating the clean (!) and undamaged (!) O-rings with Molykote silicone grease during the assembly of a connector CPT data transmission cable or during the assembly of a piezocone.
The reasons for this are:
-
Reduces friction
During assembly (which involves rotational movements that can damage the O-ring through friction), the grease allows the O-ring to move smoothly without being damaged or twisted. -
Improved sealing
The grease fills small irregularities between the O-ring and the surface, making the seal more effective and significantly reducing the risk of leaks. -
Protects the rubber
Silicone grease does not attack rubber (unlike some mineral oils or greases). It prevents drying out, cracking, and aging of the O-ring. -
Water-resistant
Silicone grease is water-repellent, making it ideal for applications in humid or variable conditions. -
Easier assembly
A lightly lubricated O-ring slides into place more easily, reducing the risk of twisting or damage during installation.
